Gamora is the adopted daughter of Thanos. While she grew to hate him, she did see him as a father figure at one point in her life. She also considered Nebula, another of Thanos' adopted children, as a sister. Gamora was Thanos' favourite daughter, as her successes in advancing his vision for the universe exalted him. In the first Guardians of the Galaxy film, Gamora is introduced as the adopted daughter of Thanos. However, she eventually betrays him and joins the Guardians of the Galaxy. In the subsequent films, she grows closer to the team and becomes an integral part of their missions.
Despite her significance in the franchise, Gamora does meet her demise in the films. In the first film, she is sacrificed by Thanos to attain the Soul Stone. In Avengers: Endgame, a 2014 version of Thanos travels to the present day, bringing with him a version of Gamora from before she met the Guardians of the Galaxy. While Tony Stark's snap disintegrates Thanos and his army, Gamora survives and goes on to appear in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. This is made possible by the interpretation of the Soul Stone, as Gamora had changed allegiances and was no longer a threat.
