What You'll Learn

Finding a spade in the eastern room
To find a spade in the eastern room, you must first enter Draynor Manor, located just north of Draynor Village. Speak to Veronica, who will be wandering around just south of the manor near the entrance. She explains that she and her fiancé, Ernest, were lost, and Ernest decided to go into the manor to ask for directions but hasn't returned.
Climb the stairs located directly north of the main entrance, and then climb the nearby ladder up to the second floor. Talk to Professor Oddenstein, who will tell you that he has turned Ernest into a chicken. He will also tell you that his machine is broken, but if you fix it, he can change Ernest back. He will ask you to get him several items, including a spade.
Go back down the stairs leading to the second floor. Walk past the other set of stairs and pick up the box of fish food on the floor. Go down to the ground floor and head into the kitchen to the west. Next to the stove is a door, and in the small room is a bottle of poison. Leave the kitchen and enter the room with a black and grey checkered floor. Next to the stairs, you will find the eastern room, where there is a spade in the corner.
With the spade in hand, exit out the back door of the eastern room. Go north around the back of the manor to the west to find the compost heap. Use your spade to search the compost heap and obtain a small key.

Using the spade on the compost heap
Using a spade on the compost heap is an important step in the "Ernest the Chicken" quest. In the game, the player must use a spade on the compost heap to find a small key.
In real life, using a spade on a compost heap is also important, though for different reasons. Composting is a method of speeding up the natural decomposition of organic materials under controlled conditions. A compost heap should be located in a shaded or semi-shaded spot that is out of the wind to prevent the compost from drying out too quickly. It should also be in direct contact with the soil so that organisms such as earthworms can aid in decomposition.
When building a compost heap, it is important to layer different types of materials. Most kitchen scraps can be used, but grease, fat, meat scraps, and bones should be avoided as they may attract pests or develop an unpleasant odor. Wood takes longer to rot than other materials, so it should be put aside for the next compost heap or added to an earlier stage pile. Horn shavings can also be added to complement the nutritional balance of the compost.
Once the compost heap has been built, it should be turned or stirred to aid in decomposition. A spade can be used to slice through the compost and turn over each slice. This helps to introduce oxygen and moisture, which are necessary for the biological process. Turning the compost can also help to regulate temperature; a properly built compost pile should reach a temperature of at least 110 degrees F at the center within a few days to a month, depending on the season.
