What You'll Learn

Frenchy's Chicken's history
Frenchy's Chicken, a Houston favourite, was founded by Percy Creuzot, a New Orleans native who moved to Houston in 1965 as a travelling salesman. Four years later, in 1969, Creuzot opened his first restaurant, originally named 'Frenchy's Po-Boys'. The name was a suggestion from a friend, who believed that 'Etienne', the original intended name, would be too difficult for potential customers to spell or find in a phone book.
On its first day of business on July 3, 1969, the restaurant made $14 ($120.04 when adjusted for inflation). Creuzot stored the cash in a shoebox until he had enough money to buy a cash register. The restaurant's menu initially included red beans and rice, hot sausage, and oyster loaf. However, after some persuasion from a neighbouring automobile dealer, Jesse Hearns, Creuzot added fried chicken to the menu. Hearns even cooked the chicken himself, telling Creuzot that he didn't need to teach Houstonians how to eat fried chicken, but he would have to teach them how to eat other kinds of Louisiana food.
The addition of fried chicken proved to be a success, and by 1985, it made up over 75% of Creuzot's business. The restaurant's name was changed to 'Frenchy's Creole-Fried Chicken', and Creuzot gained the nickname "Frenchy", as people associated the name of the restaurant with him. To compete with a Church's Chicken location across the street, Creuzot extended the closing time to 5 am.
Frenchy's Chicken has since expanded across multiple locations in Houston, serving their famous fried chicken and New Orleans-inspired Creole comfort food to the masses. The original Frenchy's on Scott Street in the Third Ward closed in 2019, and a new flagship store opened in its place in 2022.
