Jaylah's makeup was indeed time-consuming. It required four hours daily to apply. The makeup designer Joel Harlow and lead makeup artist Richie Alonzo created the makeup effects for Jaylah.
The makeup of Jaylah incorporated a pair of contact lenses and some extremely subtle prosthetics. The prosthetics represented ridges near Jaylah's eyes and stretched from the actress' nose to her forehead. However, the entire bottom part of the face was the actress' own skin, not covered by prosthetics. The black lines on Jaylah's face were done sculpturally on a thin forehead appliance. Joel Harlow mentioned that it would have been challenging to maintain those lines every day, so they were made slightly raised to know exactly where they were.
The makeup was labour-intensive due to the effort required to apply the paint and select the right shade of white for the skin colour. A multitude of pale colours was used, giving an overall impression of white because of the adjacent black lines. Applying the various pale shades in different orders would produce slightly different appearances.
